About Us
STPI-Kolkata is the 10th jurisdictional directorate that has been playing a significant role in promoting IT/ITeS exports from West Bengal since its inception during FY 1995-96. Apart from Kolkata, STPI centres under this jurisdictional directorate are operational at Durgapur, Haldia, Kharagpur, and Silguri in West Bengal.
Over the years, STPI-Kolkata has played a very important role to promote the region as a preferred IT destination and act as single window agency for IT/ITeS industry by putting new milestones in IT exports of the state. During 1995-96, STPI-Kolkata started with 25 approved units with IT/ITeS esports contributing to Rs. 7.61 crore. In FY 2021-22, STPI-registered units under STPI-Kolkata jurisdiction contributed Rs. 8,450 crore IT/ITeS/ESDM exports.
The Beginning
of KolkataSTPI-Kolkata Centre become operational in 1995 and started providing statutory services to IT /ITeS units registered under the STP Scheme and hardware manufacturing units under EHTP Scheme. During 1995-96, STPI-Kolkata approved 25 units, of which 20 were operating units and 10 were exporting units. In 2021, STPI-Kolkata was formulated as the 10th jurisdictional directorate, separating from STPI-Guwahati, which now serves only the North-East states.
The Growth Booster in West Bengal
The Role of STPI in the growth of the IT industry has been tremendous, especially in the case of start-up SMEs. STP scheme the catalyst The STP scheme is a 100 percent export-oriented scheme for the development and export of computer software, including export of professional services using communication links or physical media. This scheme is unique in its nature as it focuses on one product/sector, i.e. computer software. The scheme integrates the government concept of 100 percent Export Oriented Units (EOUs) and Export Processing Zones (EPZs) and the concept of Science Parks/Technology Parks, as operating elsewhere in the world. The total exports from the STPI-registered units under STPI-Kolkata in FY 2021-22 touches Rs. 8,450 crore.
New Initiatives
Advanced Internet Operations Research in India
“Advanced Internet Operations Research in India (AIORI)” is a Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Govt. of India project which is being implemented by Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) with an outlay grant-in-aid fund for Rs. 424 Lakhs over the project period of 3 years. STPI-Kolkata is the nodal office collaborating with ISOC-Kolkata and India Internet Foundation (IIFON), Kolkata for completion of this project.
STPI-Kolkata's Sub-Centers:
STPI has expanded its presence pan-India since its inception in 1991 with 3 centres to disperse tech-driven entrepreneurship to Tier-II/III cities. Today, STPI has 62 centres of which 54 centres are in Tier-II/III cities. These centres have been playing a pivotal role in boosting IT/ITeS/ESDM exports from the respective region, generating employment, and fostering startups to develop software products.
